Vic Hutfield was a pioneer in the fields of motorcars, motorcycles and aeroplanes. Born in Gosport, Hampshire on 26 May 1887, he was the son of William and Sarah.  

The 1891 census for Upper Mill Lane, Gosport shows Vic, 3 years old. He is attending the local school St John’s, in Forton Road.

Ten years later in 1901 the census records the family living at 5, Willow Place, just off Forton Road, Gosport. Vic is age 13, laundry boy.

Vic’s greatest achievements must be constructing aircraft, as he built two, the first was for a Naval Officer and in 1909 he built the RAS monoplane, possibly one of the first aircraft in Britain to fly without an aided take off. Others did get airborne before Vic, but they all had to be towed or pulled to gain lift-off.
